Paper Mustachios

Just in the nick of time! Limited Edition Paper Mustachios in support of Movember. For those of you who've been living under a rock, Movember is the month of November where men let the facial hair flow to raise funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. So given the fact that I have a little difficulty growing a full upper lip carpet (I know I'm not alone) I made these mustachios resembling tools of the paper kutting trade. If you want to support the Movember movement (man or woman) cut one of these guys out and rock on.

Mail Order Monster

For this paper kraft we're skipping ahead a few letters to the letter L. The design brothers, Don and Ryan Clark, who make up Invisible Creature started an awesome "send and you shall receive" project. The Lil' Happy Invisible Creature S.A.S.E. Club spoke directly to my youth. I remember sending envelopes to skateboard companies and getting my envelope back filled with lots of goodies. This nostalgic feeling of being excited every time you checked the mail is exactly what this club is all about. Invisible Creature only had one requirement, the envelope you sent them had to be creatively designed or illustrated. I incorporated Choice Kuts into my envelope by creating a mini paper kraft version of Leroy C. - a vinyl toy monster designed by Invisible Creature and produced by Super7. The envelope housing Leroy was designed to be a crate inspired by the crate monster from the movie "Creepshow".

My sincere apologies for the lack of updates. I've had a tremendous amount of other projects going on. I really can't complain though, I love the distraction from work... just not from my paperkraft work. :) So, my wife being the Class of 2012 advisor at her high school, she enlisted my help for this years Homecoming dance. I've been working on creating the logo, posters, postcards, t-shirts, and hand screen-printing sashes. It was a nice break from the daily routine at work and fun working with my wife and her students.

Eight-Bit Excitement

Growing up, my brothers and I were lucky enough to have a NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). We would play that thing for hours, we knew all the tricks to getting those temperamental cartridges to work (blowing in the bottom and wiggling the hell out of them...). One of our favorite games to play together was "Excitebike". The game was so simple yet so addictive, the possibility of over-heating was a little annoying but without it the game would have been way to easy. I love how when you crash, you're magically swept off the track and have to run back to your bike. So for the letter E, I made my own version of Excitebike out of paper. Given that this is paper, I need to be extra careful not to let it overheat... I don't want to start a fire.

Digital Love

For the letter D, I chose to make the incredibly talented French duo Daft Punk. Daft Punk has an amazing knack for letting the beat drop (it's great when you can listen to a whole album non-stop on a long commute). I love techno, electro, funk, hip-hop and somehow they combine it into a melting pot of awesomeness. Their whole get up is sweet, from the black leather Adidas, all the way up to their dope robot helmets. And as a bonus, it wouldn't be Daft Punk without a little glow. A big thanks to my brother Joel Perez for helping me out with the screen printing, I couldn't have done it without him.

Cubicle Farm

For the letter C, I decided to make my cubicle from work. I really, really dislike cubicles, I feel they limit creative collaboration. If I ever start or become part of a studio, it has to have a bar-like setup (so conducive for good, creative work). I've added a few things to the cubicle that aren't at my work, the wallpaper for example (it's my home computer wallpaper), I don't think HR would like me having that up. This project was quite an undertaking, it took six 12"x18" sheets of paper to fit all the pieces for printing.

My wife and I are visiting some great friends in SF for the weekend. It's going to be a busy and fun filled time. Unfortunately, I won't be able to post photos of my cubicle I made for the letter C. But here's a quick shot to hold you over until next week when I can post more.

Big Bully

I love bullies! I have two of the fattest, smelliest and noisiest cuddle monsters ever (boy, that's a lot of "ests"). So, for the letter B I really couldn't think of anything better to make other than a big bulldog. I'm incorporating the corresponding letter in each paper kut, sometimes obvious, sometimes not. The bulldog's insanely good crop dusting ability became the perfect place for the letter B.

Captain Accordion

The letter A starts this project off and with it, this accordion. Looking at the accordion after printing and trimming it, I realized it remind me of something. The blue and red, the big A on the front... this thing totally reminded me of Captain America (all that's missing is a bunch of stars). I guess subconsciously I had Captain America on the brain (I had recently seen a trailer for the new movie, while watching Transformers 3). So given that the new movie looks pretty dang awesome, I think I'll be embracing the Captain and his new found love for polka music.

Hello & welcome

Choice Kuts is a paper kraft initiative created by designer Tommy Perez. Starting in July of 2011 a paper kraft inspired by, but not limited to the alphabet (other ideas may pop in) will be posted as frequently as possible.

This project was inspired by the overall lack of creative inspiration at work. I felt I needed an outlet to recharge my creativity and release the stress of the daily routine. Having always had a love for cutting, folding and working with paper it seemed to be the appropriate fit.
